An Imposing Lighthouse

The Whale Lighthouse is no ordinary lighthouse. It's a landing light, an imposing structure designed to guide ships through the sometimes tumultuous waters of the Atlantic.

Built in 1854, the lighthouse was lit the same year. With 257 steps and a height of 57 metres (bulb height), it offers a breathtaking view of the ocean and surrounding island. The lighthouse's elevation is 59.39 meters above the highest seas, giving it a range of 27 nautical miles, or around 50 kilometers.

Fire features

The light of the Phare des Baleines is distinctive. It emits four white flashes every 15 seconds, a signal light that has guided countless ships safely to shore. The lighthouse's light source comes from two 250-watt halogen lamps operating at 220 volts.

An automated historical monument

The Phare des Baleines is not only a guide for ships, it's also a French historic monument. It has been classified as such because of its historical and architectural importance.

Despite its status as a historic monument, the lighthouse has adapted to changing technologies. It was automated in 2001, meaning it no longer requires a lighthouse keeper to operate. However, the lighthouse is still managed by a company, guaranteeing its upkeep and preservation for future generations.
